GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to our first ABAA member newsletter! We have certainly come a long way from ABAAs conception when it was a small, regional, Massachusetts focused group. Now in its 12th year of operation, ABAA has reinvigorated to a national and powerful organization. This year we are amping up our communications to our members- not only so you know about all the changes underway, but also so you can get involved. In addition, we are re-designing our strategy at the Board of Directors level, in order to strengthen our voice and authority in the industry.

YOUR QUESTIONS, OUR ANSWERS:

What is the procedure for testing pull-off strength of air barrier materials?

The Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) requires adhesion testing (commonly referred to as pull testing) to be conducted in the field in accordance with ASTM D4541 on all air barrier materials that use adhesion as their means for attachment to the wall. The purpose of this test is to measure the adhesive strength of a material to determine whether the installation has been completed correctly. Release or separation during the test will occur along the weakest part of the material, or between the material and the substrate. This could include the interface between the test apparatus and material, between two materials, within the material, between the substrate and the material, or between the surface of the substrate and the substrate.
